Thank you to all the families that were able to attend our Pillars of Care Assembly!

Congrats to the winners of the awards for Care for Self, Others, Place, Learning!

Thank you for all the wonderful donations to the Toonies for Terry Foundation!

Our class was able to complete 230 laps in total! Which averages over 9.5 laps per student. Great Job Room 15!

Students wrote and marked their week 3 spelling test today! Thank you to the students and parents for studying up on these important terms!

Students began creating and planning their Equity and Equality Skits! I cannot wait to see them all Starting Wednesday Oct 4th!

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Tomorrow is our first Pillars of Care Assembly at 8:15 in the gym.
Parents of students in Room 15 that will be receiving an award have been notified by phone.

Afterwards we are going to have our annual Terry Fox Run.
Please ensure that your children are wearing running shoes and comfortable clothes for the run.
Eating a healthy breakfast before the run is highly recommended.
We are also collecting "Toonies for Terry" or any other amount you can spare to support cancer research.

In addition it is also "Orange Shirt Day." On this day communities are coming together
in a spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters.
Speak up by wearing something orange tomorrow.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In the past three lessons in Math, students created their own word problem involving decimals.
Students were challenged to think of a suitable context (e.g. grocery shopping),
use concise language to express their problem, as well as show the steps to
solve the problem and provide an answer sentence.

Please check in with your child to see, if they need to complete this assignment at home.

In Language Arts, we are continuing to generate descriptive words for picture prompts, as
we are becoming more proficient in using strategies that help us describe people and places.
In Grade 6, we expect are certain standard of vocabulary use to avoid vague language.


A car drove down the street.
A silver metallic SUV sped down on the left lane of westbound Beddington Boulevard.

Identifying word classes, is another area of focus during this study of descriptive language.
Examples for word classes are: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, pronouns etc.

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Thank you for taking an interest in your child's learning and coming to meet our Grade 6 team last Thursday.

Dear parents & guardians,

As you know, there is no school tomorrow, as we teachers will take part in professional development activities.

This week, students have been engaged in activities in the following curricular areas:

Adding & subtracting numbers involving decimals and creating a word problem by using them in an authentic setting (e.g. shopping).

Analyzing and identifying conditions that affect the growths of trees by studying tree cookies and environmental factors that influence a forest ecosystem.

Identifying, generating specific and descriptive vocabulary, as well as using adjectives and adverbs in descriptive writing tasks, such as describing places and people.

Social Studies:
Contrasting and comparing the concepts of equity and equality, as well as finding examples for both in our every day live.

I am hoping to see many of you tonight at one of the two 'Meet the Teacher' sessions.

Every Monday we issue a new spelling list to students in Grade 6.
The spelling test usually takes place on Fridays or Thursdays in short weeks.
Every list attempts to have students work with these words, identify their meaning and definition.
All words relate to the Alberta Grade 6 program of studies in major subject areas.

Dear parents & guardians,

...and just like that we are already in Week Three of the new school year.

As you know, this Thursday is "Meet the Teacher Evening" and I encourage you
to book your time to meet with me as soon as possible. There will be two sessions running from
6:30 to 7:20 and a second one right after (7:30-8:30). You can book the sessions via our school website using your CBE account.

In LA, I have marked your children's first writing samples (narrative story) and would like to share those with you at our meeting. As an area of growth, I realized that all of my students need to continue developing descriptive writing skills. This is going to be the focus for the next two weeks in LA, as we do a number of word generating and descriptive writing activities. For instance, by using picture prompts to generate suitable adjectives and specific nouns.

In Math, we are moving on to subtraction problems with numbers up to 9 999 999. Especially regrouping in numbers with multiple Zeros is often challenging for Grade Six students
(e.g. 72 005 - 51 789) and requires some practice.

In Science, students shared their understanding of Trees and Forests by contrasting them to other plants and discussing factors that can impact forests, such as wildfires, harmful insects, weather phenomenons /climate change, etc.

Dear parents and guardians,

Today students continued to work and enhance their fingerprint poems in Language Arts.
Incorporating descriptive words (adjectives and adverbs), as well as subject-specific language
will be an area of in this year's writing program.

We further, created personal reflections and goal statements for our Learning Board on the topic "Pillars of Care." We are excited to showcase our work at the upcoming Meet the Teacher Evening next week.

In Math, we are adding numbers at various difficulty levels ranging from 3-digits to 6-digits plus decimals to the thousandths place (e.g. 0.372).

Tomorrow will be our 1st spelling test:

Dear parents and guardians,

Today we started our new topic in Social Studies – Decision Making.
Questions we asked ourselves were:

What influences my decisions?
What is important when making decisions in groups?
How can decisions be fair?

Further, we discussed the importance of rationale, perspective and opinion when making decisions for self and others.  

In Math we will be reviewing place value in regards to addition problems for the rest of this week.

With the ‘Meet the Teacher’ and ‘Pillars of Care Assembly’ events getting closer, we are busy designing items for our Learning Board to incorporate each student’s voice.

I will post more information about how to register for a time period for the ‘Meet the Teacher Evening ‘ shortly. You will be able to this starting next Monday through your CBE accounts.

Dear Parents & Guardians,

 I welcome the opportunity to invite you to our "Welcome Back Assembly" tomorrow morning at 8:15 am in our gym. Also note the pancake breakfast on Wednesday morning before school starts.

In the classroom we are delving into place value of numbers up to 9 999 999 and decimal numbers to the thousandths place (e.g. 0.632). By the end of this unit students are expected to represent numbers in said range in standard, written and expanded form (e.g. 23 412 = 20000 + 3000 + 400 + 10 + 12).

In Science we started our first unit "Trees & Forests" and will be learning and researching this diverse and fascinating ecosystem.

Now, that we have a school-wide schedule in place, students in Room 15 have Music twice/ thrice a week (Day 1 & Day 2).

Thank you all for returning the school forms to us. Almost all students in room 15 have done so.

 Dear parents and guardians,

This first week back was a great opportunity for me and the students to get to know each other.
We have been doing a few initial writing as well as math tasks and assessments, which will help me get an overview of each student's strengths and areas of growths.

In addition, we have created a classroom contract together as a class. I am sending this document home and encourage you to review the rules created by your children. Please sign it and send it back to school. Also, feel free to email or inquire about the "penalty box," which has been used in Grade 6 classrooms at our school in previous years. Its intention is to deter students from negative actions that impact the learning and safety of themselves and their peers. Our goal is to use it as little as possible.

Some students still need to complete their writing assignment:
=> Complete your personal story (based on a picture prompt) as homework over the weekend.

Thank you for returning many forms to me this week.
Those who still need to return the school forms (sent in the brown envelope), please do so next week.

September, 6th

Dear parents,

Today we reviewed important story elements and started writing our own stories based on picture prompts in LA. We further completed the Edmonton Spelling test to determine our current spelling level.
In Math we used a variety of operations and equations to represent ourselves using numbers.
We also developed a classroom contract based on five rules that will help us have a respectful and successful year in Grade Six.

Please make sure your child has brought home the following four forms.
Please fill out the white forms, sign them and send them back to school as soon as possible.

September 5th

Please take the time to go over the handbook with your children in the next couple of days.

In the afternoon, we were working in groups to solve an engineering teamwork challenge.

Students were asked to build the tallest plastic straw structure that can support a golf ball.
I was impressed with some of the designs our groups came up with and have uploaded a picture of
our Room #15 straw towers. I was especially content about the way students interacted and overcame challenges during the construction.

Welcome Back to School!!!

Dear parents and guardians,

Summer is coming to a close and a new school year begins.
I am as excited as your children, since I am new to this great
school community here in Beddington.

A little bit about myself:
My name is Pascal Mueller and I live in Mount Pleasant / NW Calgary.
I have been working for the Calgary Board of Education since 2011.
My teaching career started in Germany near Munich in 2007.
Most recently I was teaching Grade 4-6 at G.W. Skene School in the S.E.
After taking some time of to be with my family
(we have a six months old baby daughter and a lively son who is almost three)
I am glad to start a new endeavour by teaching Grade Six at BHS.

Let's make this year - their final year at elementary level - an amazing experience!
